Foxgloves, or Digitalis, are one of my favorite flowers to grow at our flower farm in Philadelphia. Reminiscent of adorable fairy hats, they're easy to grow from seed, highly productive, repeat bloom during the summer, and usually bloom for two seasons, if not more.

How do you keep foxgloves blooming?

Removing spent foxglove flowers may encourage reblooming and further enjoyment of the plant late into the season. It is also a way to tidy up the garden and still enjoy the large leaves and statuesque growth form. Many types of plants benefit from deadheading, and foxglove is no exception.

How long do foxglove blooms last?

The plants grow well from seeds or cuttings—in shady spots, you may need to stake larger stalks—and will bloom for two to three months starting in late spring.

Does foxglove bloom every year?

A few foxgloves are true perennials, blooming each year. Many of these come in more subdued colors with smaller blossoms, but they still are wonderful additions to the perennial garden.

Foxglove plants contain toxic cardiac glycosides. Ingestion of any parts of the plant (and often the leaves usually as a result of misidentification for comfrey, Symphytum officinale) can result in severe poisoning. Symptoms include nausea, headache, skin irritation and diarrhoea.

Let Foxglove reseed and form colonies throughout the garden. In the right place Foxgloves are an excellent choice for a self-seeding garden! After your foxgloves finish flowering, don't deadhead the flower spike and allow the seedpods to naturally ripen.

Common foxglove blooms mainly in early summer. The main bloom time is in early summer but occasionally additional flower stems are produced later in the season, especially if the main flower stalks are cut after blooming.

The blooms which grow tall- can grow to be around 6′ tall so they are perfect for planting towards the back of gardens for height and interest.

The most effective and consistent herbicide was Metsulfron methyl (Msm). It eliminated at least 94% of the plants for each application. Msm also provided good residual control of any germinating foxglove seed in all the plots. Picloram was only effective when sprayed in fall, where it eliminated 87% of the plants.
